In Devarim, it describes the ideal society as one where the people worship G-d and perform the Mitzvot Bein Adam L'Makom (monotheism, no Avodah Zara, fearing and loving G-d), but also one where the values of Bein Adam L'Chaveiro still apply. The actions of the Jewish people show just how corrupt the nation was. There were corrupt leaders, a corrupt justice system, people looked down on others and mistreated those lower than them. It was a total breakdown of society.
In history, this theme often presents itself. This situation did not only happen to the Jews. In Nazi Germany this exact situation happened. The people were corrupt, the leaders were evil, society took a turn for the worst. Even nowadays, though it is on a much lesser scale than Nazi Germany, we often hear of scandals involving high government officials or important leaders. These people have done something wrong, have hurt other people. Sadly, these things still happen. It is not a foreign idea even nowadays.

ReplyDeleteI like how you connect the Jewish history to our basic history we learn in school. It really shows us that the Jews aren't the only ones doing wrong, but also the rest of the world. We can learn from this that not only do the Jews need to fix themselves but also the rest of society.
